Music performed and recorded at the Village Vanguard epitomizes the true sound of jazz. It's just one of those things ... the real thing ... a standard by which all other performances and recordings in the genre may be judged. Whatever the reason, the small triangular basement room beneath the gateway to Greenwich Village seems to be the acoustically perfect environment for the intimate improvisations that make this music great. Cedar Walton is no stranger to the process of recording live in the Village. These days, his trio records regularly at Sweet Basil, just a few short blocks down Seventh Avenue South from the Vanguard. More than two decades ago, his quartet with Clifford Jordan made two of the music's classic records, "Night at Boomers," just around the corner from Basil's. Not much has changed as far as jazz clubs go during those twenty years-(Boomers may be gone but the other rooms have come to fill the void) -- with one important exception, the pianos are now grand and in tune, which is just one of the reasons for the high quality (both musical and technical) of this very good sounding recording.
