Collection: MARIN ALSOP - THE MUSICAL HERITAGE SOCIETY RECORDINGS
She made history in 2007 as the first woman appointed Music Director of a major American orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, a position she held with distinction until 2021. Further cementing her pioneering status, she became the first woman to conduct the Last Night of the Proms in London in 2013 and was the first female Principal Conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra.
Currently, Alsop serves as Chief Conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (ORF) – another first for a woman – and Chief Conductor and Curator of Chicago’s Ravinia Festival. Her innovative programming often features overlooked works alongside core repertoire, reflecting her adventurous spirit.
Beyond the podium, Alsop is a passionate advocate for accessibility and education, founding programs like OrchKids in Baltimore to provide music training to underserved youth. Her numerous accolades include a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, the Gramophone Artist of the Year award, and multiple Grammy nominations.
Marin Alsop stands as a transformative figure, admired not only for her electrifying performances and profound musicianship but also for her unwavering dedication to expanding the reach and relevance of orchestral music for future generations.
