Being Pfitzner
LISTEN AND EXPLORE!Pfitzner's musical parentage appears to stem from Schubert, Schumann and Wagner. Even Brahms would appear to have been bypassed in the development of this interesting composer. It is not that his work doesn't show the influence of Brahms, it is simply that the presence of Schumann and Wagner is so strong that even in the Cello Sonata, Op. 1, one senses Brahms occasionally, but feels Schumann and Schubert in the melodies and Wagner in the harmonies. It was because of his unwillingness to change with the times, his desire to “be himself," and his later unwillingness to bow to pressure from the Nazis, that gradually isolated the man from all but his most devoted friends and followers, just as Palestrina refused to bow to political and religious pressures four hundred years earlier.

LISTEN AND EXPLOREDave Brubeck was Charles Schulz' personal choice for composing music for the Peanuts after Vince Guaraldi died, and the music he wrote for The Peanuts is featured on our Jazz Heritage Society release "Quiet As The Moon". The classic Guaraldi composition "Linus and Lucy" is giving an "uptown" twist, and there's beautiful music composed and performed by Brubeck and his quartet.

LISTEN AND EXPLOREIn all branches of the arts there are the introspective creators, for whom technique is the accompaniment to inner reflection which just happens to find its way through a medium of artistic expression. One hesitates to call such art the outlet 'of mysticism, but as an approximation that's not bad. I remember my first view of an Alben Pinkum Ryder painting a darkly lit, hardly visible horseman rode across a canvas that seemed indifferent to the event as an imitation of life but was tuned to the inner desperation of the rider to I get somewhere. Such art is not easily appropriated, and its composers are likely to be difficult to follow, giving them singular reputations but little posterity as schools to be followed.

EXPLORE THIS RECORDINGTrumpeter Marvin Stamm, rather than drag out the usual bebop standards, mostly introduces new material on his CD. Four songs are played by Berg's quartet with pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Mike Richmond, and drummer Terry Clarke; six add Bob Mintzer's tenor, and of those songs, three find Bob Malach (on tenor and soprano) making the band a sextet. Because Stamm paid as much attention to varying tempos and moods as he did to changing the instrumentation, this set holds one's interest throughout, swinging hard in a modern fashion. --Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

EXPLOREAlong with "Songs of Pomp, Circumstances, and Fire Prevention" for male quartet, and a string quartet transcription of the Flying Dutchman Overture (which "includes all the mistakes ever made by any orchestra"), Minimax is an example of Hindemith's incidental music unpublished during his lifetime. His exuberant sense of humor and love of parody eventually got him in trouble and his music banned.
