Bach With Us Again

  • Crazy Title, Beautiful Recording

    You have to respect the title - you get exactly what is described. Arias with Instrumental Obbligato. But it seems a little scholarly when you get some of Bach's most heavenly arias from his cantatas. So, this isn't a doctoral thesis, it's a beautiful recording.

  • Trio Sonatas for Two

    One of our free articles this month explains the history of the trio sonata - how it led to greater experimentation in the chamber music field. Bach's trio sonatas are part of the legacy of great trio sonatas - and we've put a few more into the Free Selections so you can get a real sense. Eliot Fisk transcribed these works for guitar and harpsichord.

  • Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center: Schubert's Octet

    In the 1980s, Lincoln Center might have been the center of the chamber music world. Great artists combined to showcase known and lesser known works. And MHS brought many of these performances to audiences via LP, cassette and then CD. This performance features guest soloist Richard Stoltzman, as well as CMS regulars.

    This performance of Schumann's glorious Piano Quartet and Schubert's only work for flute features a star studded roster, with Richard Goode, Paula Robison, Leslie Parnas, Jaime Laredo and more.

    This release goes way back into the MHS vaults. These New York musicians made several Boccherini recordings - and this LP length reissue features Boccherini's most famous and recognizable work, his Minuet.

  •  The Andreas Trio:  Rachmaninoff's Tribute to Tchaikovsky

    In the late 1970s, a group of musicians from Curtis Institute of Music formed The Andreas Trio, and made 3 recordings for MHS. Two of those recordings, featuring great Russian chamber music are now available for the first time in 50 years!

    The two works on this Andreas Trio recording aren't the most well known works but they personify the Romantic era as it came to Russia, in a time of great upheaval. Dark, brooding, expressive and virtuosic.

  • Early Music for Voice

    This recording from the American early music vocal group Capella Alamire features Ockeghem's most frequently performed mass, and a work from Josquin desPrez. The notes for this recording detail the original performance practice, which is almost equal to the music in holding one's interest.

    Both of these works are sacred pieces devoted to the praise of Mary. DesPrez's work is the more substantial, but Fayrfax's shorter work is his masterpiece.

    The complete music for Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker isn't the overwhelming box of sweets one might suspect. The battle sequence and resulting trip through the forest bring forth ideas Tchaikovsky would explore in his Pathetique, Symphony No. 6, soaring themes as only he could write.
