The Trio Elegiaque, "In memory of a great artist," is one of the most soulful compositions of Rachmaninoff's early creative period. The young composer was deeply moved by the death of P. I. Tchaikovsky, musical genius, who proved to be a great influence on Rachmaninoff's work. He started composing the trio the very same day when the sad news reached him on October 25, 1893. Rachmaninoff expressed in his music the depth and tragedy of the great composer.

In less than two months the work was finished and on January 31, 1894 its first performance took place at the Small Hall of the Noble Assembly in Moscow. Rachmaninoff himself played the piano, Y. E. Koniusa, the violin and A. A. Brandukov, the cello.
