Too much has been made of Beethoven's scowl. It should never be forgotten that the same composer who stormed the heavens with such Romantic fervor was also, particularly in the years before his deafness completely took over, the composer of some of the heartiest, happiest music of his time. This recording, by and large. represents the latter Beethoven; if none of these works offers the sort of titanic rumination We find in the late quartets and last plano sonatas, there is something appealingly straightforward about them. In a word, they entertain, and do a good job of it, too.
