In some ways Beethoven and Schumann were kindred spirits representing the same musical era. It is customary to think of Beethoven as the classical composer par excellence, along with Haydn and Mozart, and Schumann is generally regarded as the embodiment of the romantic artist. There is, however, an underlying kinship in the ideals of the two composers which goes a long way to linking two not unrelated personalities.
