The New York Times once published a survey which asked various musical figures to choose composers they found either overrated or underrated. The assignment inspired much interoffice conversation. Harold C. Schonberg, a member of the Times music department for more than 30 years and its chief critic from 1960 to 1980, who covered literally thousands of concerts for the paper, thought there were too many overrated composers to name but had no doubt about the most underrated composer. "Antonin Dvorak," he ventured, without hesitation. "His music has everything -- craft, wonderful melodies, and immense charm. All too often Dvorak is regarded as a minor nationalist. But the innocence and transparency of his music have fooled people, for his was a unique -- and musically sophisticated -- voice." But although Dvorak wrote an extraordinary amount of music -- nine symphonies, concerti for violin and piano, a vast amount of chamber music, overtures and suites, Masses and choral works, songs, a large quantity of piano music, and more than a dozen operas -- only a small percentage of it is well known. This is unfortunate, for if a listener takes the time to investigate the composer's "unknown" work, most of it will be found to be of high quality. The two works here, composed within four months of one another in early 1878, are no exception. They are gracious, charming, beautifully made, and "sentimental" in the best sense of the word. Goethe once defined chamber music as a discourse between reasonable individuals, and his words apply perfectly to this Serenade and these Bagatelles. There is a wonderful sane, sociable quality to the music -- no heavenstorming, no cosmic pretensions, just heartfelt expression from a modest and good man of tremendous talent.
