11 American Symphonette No. 2: Pavanne (arr. for woodwind quintet by Laurence Taylor) 03:19

One of America's most prolific and honored musicians, Morton Gould is acclaimed as a composer in all media -- orchestra, chamber music, film, ballet, chorus, symphonic band, and television -- in addition to being a conductor, pianist, and arranger. Born December 10, 1913 in Richmond Hill, New York, he began playing the piano at the age of four and composing at the age of six. Gaining early attention for his prodigious abilities. he pursued studies with Abby Whiteside in piano and Dr. Vincent Jones in composition. In 1932 Mr. Gould became a staff pianist at Radio City Music Hall, later moving to the staff of the National Broadcasting Company. At the age of 21 he was engaged by station WOR as conductor arranger. Many of his lighter works and orchestral settings, such as Pavanne, American Salute, and Latin-American Symphonette were introduced on these broadcasts and reflected his distinctive use of the jazz idiom and interest in folklore and the American past.
