In 1902, Ravel began writing his only quartet, dedicating it to Gabriel Faure.  He described the work as representing “a conception of musical construction, doubtless imperfectly realized, but emerging much more clearly than my earlier compositions.”  Debussy, whose only quartet was written about 10 years before Ravel's and probably prompted the creation of the later work wrote to the younger man: ''In the name of the gods of music, and in my own also, do not touch a single note of what you have written in your quartet.”
