Franz Schubert’s legacy of pianoforte music brings to light, almost as much as that of his art-songs, the individuality of his musical personality, the diversity of his expressive part prowess in the singularity of his musical genius. Some of the works have enjoyed universal popularity, including several on this recording (such as the Moment Musicale in F Minor); others have remained obscure for some reason. This priceless treasury of pieces for pianoforte includes 21 Sonatas, 8 Impromptus, 6 Moments Musicale, 2 Scherzi, variations fantasies separate movements intended in some cases possibly for inclusion in unfinished larger works, 3 piano pieces called just that, namely “Drei Klavierstucke," and literally an outpouring of hundreds of dances: Waltzes (Nobles, Sentimentales), Landler. Menuets, Deutscher, and Ecossaises. In fact, the only genre conspicuous by its absence from his output for the pianoforte is that of the concerto, although his unique Wanderer Fantasy, unusual for Schubert in its virtuosity, was later fashioned by Franz Liszt into a work at least akin to a concerto.
