Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (b. Wienmat, 1714 d. Hamburg. 1788), the second son of Johann Sebastian, composed fifty-two authenticated harpsichord concertos (including the famous double concerto of 1788 for harpsichord, pianoforte, and orchestra ). These concertos span his entire career, from student days at Leipzig and Frankfurt, through his years (1740-1767) at Berlin and Potsdam in the service of Frederick the Great of Prussia, and his last years (1767-1788) as Music Director of the Republic of Hamburg. Taken as a whole, they are among Bach's most important works.
