The saxophone sound on this recording could come from no one else. It is unique, strong, big-boned and brawny, like Stanley himself. It's a sound which grabs you by the ear and dares you not to listen. Sometimes it roars, as on Ellington's classic, Caravan; sometimes it whispers, as on Pat Metheny's spiritual ballad, If I Could. But, loud or soft, it goes straight for the heart. Stanley's musical partners, (I wouldn't dream of calling them sidemen!) Hubert, Ron, Grady, Roland and Steve, meet and support him with their own strong voices, creating the kind of excitement which can only come from live musicians interacting. The result is greater than the sum of the parts. The result is pure jazz.

This session from tenor-saxophonist Stanley Turrentine often sounds like a CTI recording from the 1970s although Creed Taylor had nothing to do with it.
