For a brief time from the latter part of the 18th through the early years of the 19th century, the clarinet, though still a youngster among wind instruments, underwent a flurry of development which put it at the forefront ofhearts of audiences and composers throughout Europe. Both Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's and Carl Maria von Weber's love for the clarinet grew out of intense friendships with perhaps the two greatest virtuosi of that time: in Mozart's case, Anton Stadler; in Weber's, Heinrich Baermann.
