"We run the gamut of approaches to improvisation,” said Loren Schoenberg, whose first album as a small-group leader this is, though he's shown us glimpses of himself in that role on his four increasingly excellent big-band records (check out Just A-Settin' and A-Rockin', the latest and the best.) 'But all the pieces have a beginning, middle and end, and I always try to play nice melodies.' As do his companions, including Adam Nussbaum, a most melodic drummer. But if you try to sing along, sometimes they'll fool you ... which is also nice.
