One suspects that Mozart's Symphony in B-flat (K. 319) and Symphony in C (K. 338) -­ usually referred to as the Symphonies nos. 33 and 34 -- would be better known if they did not immediately precede the masterpieces with which Mozart ended his symphonic career. But the spectacular brilliance and assurance of those final works has tended to draw attention from the fine creations that were their immediate precursors...The Serenades K. 375 and Serenades K. 388 are among Mozart's most impressive achievements, rivaling even the last great symphonies in their originality and expressive power. Yet the average concertgoer rarely encounters them, due most certainly to an instrumentation which no longer fits the normal mode of either orchestral or chamber music programs.
