Fortunately, listening habits are loosening and performers are able, at last, to remove the constraints of conservative tradition--one that too often produced dangerous snobbery regarding works of possible distinction, charm and beauty. This recording explores panorama of the great tradition of the Romantic pianist/composer. These men were often larger than life. They roamed the world long before the introduction of mass entertainment, as we now know it. We have chosen fifteen of these 'superstars."" There were many more. And though some are now forgotten names, each contributed a unique chemistry on the instrument and its public.

This stunning performance is an outgrowth of a highly successful lecture-recital program given throughout the country by two young American artists. Their imaginatively conceived album, recorded specially in New York for the Society, explores the great tradition of those larger-than-life superstars who changed the nature of our concert life and keyboard repertory. If you want a taste of a bygone era, here it is.
